Canvas to Transom

When you behold almost any masterfully painted faux teak patterned transom, you may notice something nearly all have in common: a deceptive beautification of steel or fiberglass disguising the fact that the boat isn’t actually made of wood. The second thing these boats have in common is that they’re probably the work of a woman with no business cards, no website and no way of reaching her except by word of mouth or social media. Her name is Monique Richter.

SPOTLIGHT Nautical NUANCES

The road to Monique Richter’s career handpainting the backs of sportfishing boats is not a linear one. Growing up in Fort Lauderdale, she attended American Heritage on a fastpitch softball scholarship. She also turned pro in wakeboarding in eleventh grade, traveling to destinations like Australia, Europe, and the Philippines for nearly a decade.

How Monique Richter is Rocking the Maritime World

Monique Richter is in total concentration mode. She stands atop a 6-foot scaffold behind the stern of a 64-foot Spencer Yacht named Cabana, paintbrush in one hand, a rectangular palette in the other and the noonday sun glowing high above her right shoulder. A soft offshore wind rustles through the blonde hair peeking out from under a baseball cap. She outlines the final “a” in the boat’s name with a fine detail brush and absolute precision, a task she makes look routine.
